After the success of the inaugural Newcastle Music Festival in 2016, we are delighted to invite you to join us in August 2017 for another feast of great music, in which brilliant local musicians share the stage with inspiring guests. Our guest artists will include Hyeseoung Kwon, an internationally-acclaimed soprano who has made Madame Butterfly her own in performances for Opera Australia, award-winning violinist Anna da Silva Chen, and British-based contralto Sylvia Clarke. We welcome back the wonderful Deborah Humble (mezzo-soprano) whose opening concert in the 2016 Festival received a standing ovation, and are excited to present for the first time John Paul Young, one of Australia’s best-loved singers. A special part of the festival will be a homecoming for two Novocastrians Anthony Albrecht (cello) and Thomas Chawner (violist in the Orava Quartet), performing together for the first time since school days in Newcastle.

An important aim of the Newcastle Music Festival is to create a stage for our finest local performers and this year’s festival will include performances by Sally Walker (flute), Christopher Allan (baritone), Terence Koo (piano), Ros Halton (harpsichord), the Dungeon Big Band with vocalist Heather Price, and the Newcastle Youth Orchestra. After the past successes of the Festival Strings, 2017 will see the inaugural Festival Choir, directed by Kim Sutherland, who will be joined by Hyeseoung Kwon for a performance of John Rutter’s sublime Requiem. The Festival will end in grand style with the Christ Church Camerata joined by Anthony Albrecht and the Festival Strings.

An exciting aspect of the 2017 Festival will be a collaboration with the University of Newcastle and artist Brett McMahon, whose installation, Baroque and Beyond, will be the setting for a number of festival events.

With music spanning a thousand years, and traversing many styles and traditions, we are sure that you will find much to love, and we look forward to your company at the festival.
