Ross Fiddes

Ross Fiddes is the founder, promoter and musical director of the award winning music theatre company The Sound Construction Company; and was the founder and conductor of the Novocastrian Arts Orchestra (now Orchestra Nova); and artistic director and principal conductor of Opera Hunter.  

As a pianist Ross has been a soloist, accompanist and recitalist in concert with and without orchestra and as a chamber player.  As conductor/musical director he has conducted symphony concerts, operas, musicals and choral concerts.

His larger-scale compositions have been performed by Opera Australia, Western Australia Arts Orchestra, The Hunter Orchestra, The Sound Construction Company, Francine Bell, Newcastle University Symphony Orchestra, Newcastle University Choir, the Novocastrian Arts Orchestra, Australian 3rd Military District Band, Shakespeare et al, Camerata Musicale, Opera Hunter, Opera Mode, Young Peoples’ Theatre, Bennelong Wind & Brass Ensemble, Ayșe Göknur Shanal, and Acacia Quartet with Anna Fraser, amongst others.  

Ross was an invited participant for the 1995 June In Buffalo International Composers’ Festival, State University of New York. Ross’s compositions have been recorded on the Wirripang, Tall Poppies, Vox Australis, Taslig and Ferndale Studios labels & broadcast on ABC Classic FM – Australia’s national good music station.

Ross’s recent compositions include a chamber opera in collaboration with librettist, the international dramatic soprano Jennifer Wilson; a song cycle commemorating the Gallipoli centenary for soprano Ayșe Göknur Shanal (now available on CD, iTunes etc); and a song cycle for soprano and string quartet premiered in November 2015 by the Acacia Quartet and soprano Anna Fraser. His new song collection is composed for Melbourne baritone Michael Lampard.
