Newcastle Youth Orchestra

Newcastle Youth Orchestra (NYO) was formed to motivate and inspire emerging young performers, between the ages of 10-25, through a diverse and challenging repertoire of orchestral music. NYO aims to provide the highest quality music education and training in a stimulating and rewarding environment.

Since it began 7 years ago, the orchestra has collaborated with many artists and other musical organisations to provide unique experiences for the orchestra members and audiences alike. A highlight of 2016 was a performance of Elena Kats-Chernin Flute Concerto – Night and Now, commissioned and performed by Sally Walker. In 2017 NYO collaborated with Australian children’s author Jackie French in a concert for Newcastle Writer’s Festival, featuring her award-winning book Josephine wants to Dance accompanied by well-known orchestral gems.

Later in 2017 NYO was invited to accompany the Festival Chorus in the Newcastle Music Festival in John Rutter’s Requiem. In 2018 NYO collaborated with the National College of Dance and Carl Caulfield in Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf for the Newcastle Writer’s Festival. NYO was a recipient of the Newcastle City Council’s inaugural Cultural Grant supporting the orchestra’s 2018-2019 Concert Season.
