Michael Lampard

Tasmanian-born baritone, Michael Lampard is establishing himself as a leading young dramatic baritone performing extensively across Australia, and with international credits including performances in Asia, Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom. In 2010 Michael graduated from the University of Tasmania with a Master of Music degree, and in 2013 he relocated to Melbourne.

Operatic highlights include the roles of Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Guglielmo (Cosi Fan Tutte), Conte Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Oreste (Iphigenie en Tauride), Zurga (Les pêcheurs de perles), Escamillo and Morales (Carmen), Scarpia (Tosca), Germont (La Traviata), Renato (Un Ballo in Maschera), Macbeth and Banquo (Macbeth), Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore), Rigoletto (Rigoletto), Biterolf (Tannhauser), Hunding (Die Walkure) and Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde). He has also covered many roles including Figaro (Barber of Seville), Sharpless (Madama Butterfuly), Herald (Lohengrin) and Wolfram (Tannhauser)

The Herald Sun said this of Michael’s performance as Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca (2017):

…it’s Lampard’s slimy, limping and crotch-centric Scarpia that steals the show, deftly portraying man as beast in well articulated hair raising resonance and dramatic fullness.


As well as his operatic engagements Michael has performed a number of major oratorio and concert works including Messiah (Handel), Elijah and Saint Paul (Mendelssohn), St. Matthew Passion (J.S. Bach) and Requiems and Masses by Mozart, Faure, Durufle, Rütti, Hidas and Haydn.

Companies Michael has performed with include Victorian Opera, Melbourne Opera, CitiOpera, Lyric Opera of Melbourne, Emotionworks Cut Opera, Rome Opera Festival, IHOS Opera, Gertrude Opera, as a chorister with Opera Australia and with many leading orchestras and ensembles including Sydney Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Orchestre Pasdeloup, and Orchestra Victoria. Conductors including Placido Domingo, Richard Bonynge, Anthony Negus, Brian Castles-Onion, Gaetano Colajani, Warwick Stengards, Fabian Russell, Richard Mills, Myer Fredman, Richard Prakhoff, and Gary Wain.

Michael regularly partners with the pianist Rhodri Clarke to present recitals in Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate. They have performed successful recitals at the Melbourne Recital Centre as well as presenting an acclaimed recital of Schubert’s Winterreise as part of the 3MBS Schubert Marathon. Michael has presented many recitals in Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, across Tasmania, in Japan and regularly performs art song recitals in the United Kingdom. Michael has recorded for ABC Classic FM and has been broadcast on many local and national television and radio stations here in Australia and in Japan.

2018 has been a busy year for Michael with a tour of China and Singapore performing the role of Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata, reprising the role of Don Giovanni to a capacity audience in the Wonderland Spiegeltent, and performing the role of Kurwenal in Melbourne Opera’s successful season of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. A critically praised performance, Concertonet wrote:

Michael Lampard’s Kurwenal… strongly delivered and well-rounded portrayal… commanding stage presence.

And Limelight magazine saying:

Michael Lampard… enhanced the poignant beauty of Act III’s lamentation and death with his honeyed baritone.

Upcoming performances include the roles of Rigoletto, Don Giovanni, the Duke (Romeo and Juliet) and Marcello in La Boheme. Michael also presents recitals in the United Kingdom, Melbourne, Sydney, Newcastle, Tasmania and he presents the world premiere of James Humberstone’s The Weight of Light at The Street Theatre in Canberra as well as seasons in Goulburn and Sydney.

Michael is also an experienced conductor and composer. Recent compositions have been performed by The Art of Sound Orchestra, Quartz String Quartet, Sally-Anne Russell, Suzanne Shakespeare, Merrin Torpy, Allegra Giagu, Jamie Moffat, Alexandra Oke, Pamela Christie and Rhodri Clarke.
